Sometimes in emergency situations, a person's true nature comes out. The Greek captain and his officers were on the first lifeboat when this Greek cruise ship sank of the Wild Coast of South Africa! It was left to two entertainers - a guitarist and a magician - to summon help. Through their efforts, and that of the South African National Sea Rescue Institute, not one soul was lost. The guitarist was the last one off the ship!
Yiannis Avranas, the captain of the Greek cruise liner Oceanos said later that he was satisfied that he had carried out his duties effectively in the rescue of all 571 passengers and crew when the cruise ship sank off the coast of South Africa, and he added that he could not understand why some passengers were now attacking him. "When I give the order abandon ship, it doesn't matter what time I leave. If some people want to stay, they can stay."
Epirotiki Cruise Lines had within the three years preceding the sinking, lost two other ships, the company's flagship Pegasus only two months before, and the Jupiter, three years before. The moral of the story: Sail with a reputable cruise line!
