British doctor and experienced diver Ben Burville explains: "I would advise that divers do not touch marine life. Notably grey seals have a range of rather unpleasant bacteria in their mouths and these bacteria can cause serious infections.
Some people watching this video will be critical of my interaction with this young seal - I respect your opinion but please keep in mind that no one in the world has spent more time underwater with grey seals and my understanding comes from being in this incredibly fortunate position.
This interaction was initiated by the grey seal.
The rather unusual thing about this encounter is that the seal was one that I had dived with before. With over 5000 seals at the Farne Islands I rarely see the same seal.
This particular seal had dived with me for over 1 hour, two weeks before this encounter.
10 minutes into this dive the seal made a direct approach and initiated contact.
Please remember that some people shoot these incredibly gentle creatures, they forget that seals have a right to feed. Seals do not take more than they need, they do not exhibit greed. They survive in the harsh, unforgiving conditions of the North Sea and other expanses of temperate and cold waters. They are not pets and they are not vermin.
After hundreds of hours underwater with grey seals I would trust any wild grey seal (underwater) more than any domesticated dog.
Over the last 18 years they have shown me how to dive with them all year round and they have brought a gentle tranquility to my life.
I have great respect for these beautiful marine mammals that I have the pleasure to call my #divebuddies"
