The aircraft was hired by the US Government (FEMA) to pick up relief supplies in Hawaii and deliver them to Guam for the Super Typhoon "Mangkhut" relief effort.  It stopped in Oakland California for fuel on its flight from its base in Kiev.  The Antonov An-225 Mriya (Ukrainian: 'dream' or 'inspiration') is a cargo aircraft that was designed by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Ukrainian SSR within the Soviet Union during the 1980s.  It is powered by six turbofan engines and is the heaviest aircraft ever built, with a maximum takeoff weight of 640 tonnes (710 short tons; 630 long tons).  It has a wingspan of 290 feet (88 meters).  The aircraft was originally built to transport the Russian Space Shuttle "Buran".  Designed by the Antonov Design Bureau in Kiev, Ukraine, it is not a military aircraft, but is capable to transport cargo that no other aircraft is able to.  The airplane had its first flight in early 1988 and entered service in 1989.  The Antonov-225 is the world's heaviest aircraft, although its wingspan is less than that of the "Spruce Goose" (Howard Hughes' flying boat), which never flew more than a single, short, low-altitude test flight.  The Antonov-225 is also larger than the C-5 Galaxy (the largest aircraft in the U.S. inventory) and the Airbus A380.  Also watch this Antonov-225 documentary
